What’s the most useful thing you could know about your own life? In this era-defining book, developed from her ground-breaking Radio 4 essay series, Naomi Alderman turns her boundless curiosity and incisive thinking to a question that affects us all – how do we understand, and navigate, the epoch we’re living through? She calls this epoch the Information Crisis. The internet has flooded us with more knowledge, opinions, ideas, opportunities, as well as verbal attacks and misinformation than ever before. It lets us learn more quickly and also spread falsehood more quickly, it brings us together and also divides us in new ways, it is now the lens through which we perceive and understand the world. There is no going back.

What’s the most useful thing you could know about your own life?

In this era-defining book, developed from her groundbreaking Radio 4 essay series, Naomi Alderman turns her boundless curiosity and incisive thinking to a question that affects us all: how do we understand, and navigate, the epoch we’re living through? She calls this epoch the Information Crisis.

The internet has flooded us with more knowledge, opinions, ideas, opportunities, as well as verbal attacks and misinformation, than ever before. It lets us learn more quickly and also spread falsehood more quickly, it brings us together and also divides us in new ways, it is now the lens through which we perceive and understand the world. There is no going back. But we have been here before. In fact, this is humanity’s third information crisis.

The first, the invention of writing 5,000 years ago, and the second, the invention of the printing press 600 years ago, drastically reshaped our perceptions, interactions and mental landscapes in ways that feel acutely familiar. Overwhelmed by information, people become afraid and angry, unsettled and distressed, as well as more knowledgeable, educated and curious. By looking at those previous information crises, both the turmoil and the advances, Alderman asks what we can learn from the past to better understand our present, and prepare for our future.

Drawing on the work of philosophers and historians, Don’t Burn Anyone at the Stake Today explores how new technology opens up new ways of being and helps us chart a way forward (once again), through the turbulent seas of information overload.

Though completely different to ‘Lessons in Chemistry’, this novel is a worthy successor and is as brilliantly life-affirming and enjoyable!
Batter Grey is a fantastically flawed and witty protagonist with a passion for all things poetry, which leads him to apply for a role at the prestigious and illusive Peck and Peck poetry journal in New York City.

House of Books & Friends is overjoyed to welcome author Marta Perez-Carbonell to discuss her book, ‘I Made You Up Inside My Head’. The event will take place on Wednesday 11th November and will involve a discussion, a Q&A, and a chance for you to get your book signed by Marta. Marta will be in conversation with lecturer Luis Castellví Laukamp.

This event is in partnership with Instituto Cervantes.

📕About the book:
On a sleeper train from London and Edinburgh, a woman and two strangers pass the time by telling stories about their lives.

One man reveals the true story behind the novel he wrote: the young man, Hans, who trusted him with intimate details about his life, and whose confidence he betrayed when he converted Hans’s life into fiction for his own gain.

As her cabin-mates reveal that Hans has since disappeared, with foul-play suspected, Alicia becomes gripped by the question of what really happened between the two men. She begins to re-examine her own memories, to try and discern what brought her to this point – and her involvement in the story told that night soon goes beyond a mere observer.

✏️About the author
Marta Pérez-Carbonell was born and raised in Spain and now teaches contemporary Spanish literature at Colgate University in upstate New York; she has also worked as a translator and interpreter. I Made You Up Inside My Head is her first novel.
